一封教授建議的"陶瓷"信寫法

I am applying to KSU (amongst other places) for a Ph.D., and I am very interested in your research areas. I would like to explore the possibility of doing my research with you, with financial support.
One possible area that would interest me a lot is in applying Tikhonov
regularization to your problem in computational neuroscience, since I
understand that neural data can be very noisy, and yet sparse.
Alternately, I am also interested in applying evolutionary algorithms toyour genetic neural network parameter estimation. One of my other interests in in parallel processing. Are you considering parallel implementations for any of your optimization/estimation algorithms? Considering that the projects that you list in your web site would probably be very computationally intensive, that may be a worthwhile strategy to pursue.
I presented a paper entitled "Hybrid Gradient Descent Based Training ofProbabilistic Recurrent Networks" in the International Conference on Neural Networks and Image Processing, Bangalore, last year. It is a reviewed publication. If have attached a copy of the article in pdf format.

He has evinced a keen desire to learn, and already has considerable mastery over my area of research . If I have any funding available, I would definitely try my very BEST to get this person . This person may have an MS degree, while many applicants have only a BS degree.

一篇柏克萊大學Career Center的專題訪問，文中訪問了三所名校（NYU， HAR
VARD，YALE）的admissions officials他們對於good statement of purpose（好的讀書
計畫）的看法，在這裡跟大家分享一下啦！
文章提到其實他們都很重視寫作風格與清晰度。此外
，當然也要清楚說明一下你的研究主題，還有為什麼人家的研究所適合你(focus and fit
)。而我覺得重點在於這幾所學校老師提出他們心目中亮紅燈的讀書計畫，也就是一些讓
他們想一邊叫oh my god一邊撞牆覺得自己浪費時間的東西：
1.沒有條理的讀書計畫
2.看起來是為別所學校寫的讀書計畫（硬投其他學校碰運氣來申請一下的那種）
3.文法與詞句謬誤百出、說話者還搞不清楚自己申請的動機與目標
4.講太多與未來研究無關的個人經歷（如童年回憶）、學生學習歷程中出現gap（斷層...
呃，我想這裡指的是，如果你的學經歷有轉折處）卻沒交代清楚、或者是對要申請的研究
所與環境沒有基本的瞭解。
5.過份想要幽默。
6.若申請phd則不應花太多篇幅陳述個人課外活動經驗，除非那些跟未來研究有直接相關

看了新生的statements of purpose 的感想

一位曾經幫學校看過SOP與其他文件的學生的感想-轉自椰林留學板

各位正在申請學校的同好們:

先祝大家順利, 這兩天我因為幫系上安排新生來訪的事, 手上就有了今年收
進來的新生的所有資料(除了推薦信之外), 我也很火系上叫我看新生的東西,
因為花了我很多時間, 可是看一下還蠻好玩的, 寫一些心得給大家參考,
我是唸文科的, 所以可是不是適用所有學科

1.GRE,
我看收進來的, 大半verbal 都是600 左右, 很少5字頭的, 有4字頭的我就在想他到底
有什麼地方特別好嗎?  原來是來自一個跟我們一樣很理論的系, 也許跟我們系主任有
淵源吧,  分析好像都600 左右, 數學完全不行, 有400多的也有600 多, 沒看到幾個700
的, 看來當初我數學考720 還算高分:-)
以前我申請時, 有跟系上的director 聯絡, 他跟我說,  verbal 要700 以上才行,
我看一下, 跟本沒有人有700, 我就開玩笑的說,  "Ken lied to me." 他們跟我說,
現在ETS 的腐敗也不是新聞了, standard tests 不像以前那麼重要了

2. statement of purpose
我看到的是收進來的嘛, 沒看到沒收的, 沒法做比較, 不過我看寫得好的都是這樣,
不要太多修詞, 因為看的人看那麼多, 會覺得很沒重點, 很煩, 而且覺得沒什麼料,
才會這樣寫
有趣的經驗, 比如跟誰做過什麼東西, 寫過什麼東西, 這個多寫一點, 會覺得
這個人是有點sense 知道我們系上是在做什麼的
以後要做什麼東西, 很多人都很模糊, 一看就知道有沒有唸過graduate school,
有人是under直接申請的, 有人是master, 我們系如果under 直接來的, 幾乎都是
名校, 而且看起來under唸的東西要很focused 在我們系的走向才行,
master 之後才來的, 要做的東西最好是系上一看就有老師會有很大的興趣的,
不是跟老師的東西重複, 而是把比如說兩三個老師的東西融合,
那就會覺得, 這個人來應該會跟這些人做, 做出來的又跟他們不完全一樣, 是新的,
還有, 列出老師的名字時, 真的要做一些網路上的research, 看怹們在開什麼課,
不然有人列一些1名字, 可是這些人的東西實在不怎麼合得起來, 就會覺得這個人
只是列一些1有名的人1, 他根本不清楚他來要做什麼, 更重要的是, 他來了就會
發現此路不通, 與其他來了才1發現他要做的東西不對, 不如先拒絕他來1吧

Points to keep in mind before sending an e-mail

I get a LOT of e-mail from prospective graduate students. It is nice that so many people are interested in studying here. What follows is a list of things to consider BEFORE sending an e-mail to me (or anyone else, for that matter).

Keep in mind the following points:
The person you are e-mailing is probably very busy. Even if I spend an hour a day, every day, reading/answering e-mail, there still is not enough time to writea thoughtful response to each one. If you keep your e-mail short and to the point, you are more likely you receive a response.
Why are you writing? What do you hope to get in a reply? The recipient should not have to guess.
Do not use slang and abbreviations. "How r u?" may be appropriate for chat-rooms, but not if you want to be taken seriously.
Please use the Web to answer your questions, if possible.
Get the recipient's name right! I've had all kinds of variations on my name usedby people who I don't know. People have mis-spelled my name, or confused my first and last names.
If you really want me to answer your question, address the e-mail to me. If I see that your e-mail is addressed to "Dear professor," it sounds to me like you'vee-mailed everyone in my department. Why should I have to answer an e-mail thatyou've probably received a response to already?
Yes, I consider it rude when I receive e-mail that was sent to everyone in the department. We do talk to other faculty members! One of the first times I got ane-mail, I discussed it with another faculty member, only to find out that he received the same e-mail. The e-mail sender said to both of us, "I am interested specifically in your research". That cannot possibly be true, since we had completely different research areas.
Do not include your resume as a .doc attachment. If you send me an attachment, Ihave to go through extra steps to read it. It also tells me that you assume that I'm on a PC with Microsoft Windows, as if this is the only type of OS. I run Linux on my PC. It is much easier just to delete the e-mail.
Do not say you are interested in my research, then go on to say that you want towork on my operating systems (or algorithms, or databases) project. My researchis in computer architecture, VLSI, and DSP. This tells me that you either do not know what I do, or do not understand it.
Get the person's title correct. Some teachers at a university go by "Professor",some by "Dr.", and some by "Mr.", "Mrs." or "Ms." If you get it wrong, the person will assume that you don't know the difference between the titles, or that you don't care. He or she may even be offended. By the way, "doctor" is the Latinword for "teacher". It is a term of respect given to people who have completed adoctorate degree, and one of the few perks of spending 8+ years in college!
Do not assume that I have funding to hire a graduate assistant. Sometimes I do,sometimes I don't.
Some people try to make a good impression by touting their skills in webpage design, using word-processing software, or programming. I assume that everyone applying for a CS graduate program is already proficient in these things. Actually,I assume that any second-year undergraduate student is proficient with these things. If you are bragging about these skills, it gives me the impression that youdon't know what research is all about.
Above all, if you are sending an e-mail to faculty member you don't know, be sure it is professional, short, and specific (and that it is really necessary). I think all faculty members are nice people who want to be helpful, but who are also very pressed for time.
Ultimately, acceptance into graduate school is done by people examining your file. I have NEVER heard of someone being accepted into a program because of an e-mail that he/she sent. Computer Science departments like mine are blessed with many, many, good applicants every semester. We can only handle so many students ata time. If you apply, but do not get in, remember that not every deserving student is accepted. Keep a positive attitude.

A Message for Prospective Graduate Students

This message is intended primarily for students who are applying to graduate school, or are starting graduate school, and are considering working in my research group. For students who are already here, you can sign up for an advanced course or reading group that I am organizing. Other possibilities are even dropping by and talking with me, or sending e-mail to set up a visit. First, however, please read this message, especially before trying to visit.

Thanks for your interest: First of all, I would like to thank you for taking the time to look at my web pages. I appreciate your interest in my research and in the activities of our group. Due to increasing internet connectivity and a large interest in my research area, I receive an overwhelming number of e-mail messages from prospective students. Unfortunately, there are too many messages for me to give a response to each one. I regret that I cannot reply to messages that are so important to the people who send them. For this reason, I have decided to write this message to help give some useful information to you.

Learn about what we do: If you believe that my research area might potentially be interesting to you, please look carefully at my web pages to learn about our research. You might even want to try downloading some of our papers (if you are unable, please let me know). In general, I am more likely to reply to a student who has taken the time to get some idea of what my research involves, especially if they can explain why they would be well-suited to make contributions in our research group.

No "openings" in the usual sense: Many students appear to be send a form letter to a large number of faculty without a much mention of any research activities that are particular to a research group. In this case, I usually discard the message. Even if the message is personalized, many seem to send resume-style information in hopes that my research group has "openings" to fill in the sense of a typical job. For some research groups, this might be true; however, I usally do not operate this way. I usually do not offer funding directly to students before I have been able to get to know them. Thus, it is highly unlikely (although it happens once in a while to an exceptional student) that I would offer a research assistantship before getting to know a student well. I prefer that students take a course or two from me, and that they have a chance to spend some time here. After a semester or two, they can refine their interests and determine whether my research area would be most exciting to them. I could also have the opportunity to determine whether we are a suitable match in terms of technical background, motivation, personality, etc.

GREs are worthless: With regard to sending resume-style information, it is useless to report GRE scores to me; they are not a factor in any of my decisions (general motivation for this can be found by reading The Mismeasure of Man, by Stephen Jay Gould). I am less likely to respond to a message that contains GRE scores.

My goals for students: I am very excited about the possibilty of working with exceptional M.S./Ph.D. students. I intend to give strong personal guidance that will maximize their chances of building a rewarding and enjoyable career in research. Important goals that I have for students are: 1) the identification of fundamental research problems by developing a thorough understanding of current literature; 2) the development of a strong technical background that enables the proposal of independent and innovative solutions to challenging problems; 3) the presentation and publication of research in the most prestigious journals and conferences; 4) the development of personal communication and presentation skills that are needed to maximize visibility in the research community, and increase chances of future success. If you find this emphasis and my research area appealing, I believe our group could provide you with a vibrant and exciting educational experience.

How to possibly squeeze in: Admissions in the Dept. of Computer Science are based on merit, and teaching assistantships or fellowships are usually awarded to the admitted students. This is one of the best ways to come to graduate school, and then spend time trying to find the right research group. At present, my research group is pretty much full; however, I am sometimes willing to make an exception. The ordinary path into my group is to become a graduate student here and then take an upper-level course from me. If there is strong mutual interest between me and a student, chances are good she or he can start working in my group.

關於教授招學生—國外留學生經驗與想法 part5

最近有很多討論關於拿到course option的ad，究竟值不值得來加拿大讀的問題，也有人問起究竟course轉thesis有沒有可能，我在這裡可以給大家講一個例子，這個男生是我在某一門課上認識的同學，是一個新移民，本科畢業於國內很一般的學院，畢業時間大於7年，沒有轉過行，有一定的工作經驗。

他是作為independent student被學校錄取的，其實有相當多的移民最初都是這樣入學的，即申請條件並未達到學校的要求，所以要補休一些大學本科的高級專業課程，如果GPA 在B以上，就可以正式入Master Program，而且先前選修的學分也可以算入Master必修的學分。對於這個男生來說，他之所以不能直接入學，是因為他畢業時間太長，而他在學校讀的專業課的課程設置與加拿大這個專業的課程設置有太大出入，所以學校認為他必須重新補上某些重要的課程，成績合格，才可以被批准入Master Program.

他Fall Term的成績不錯，Winter Term又選了兩門課，感覺也不錯，入Program是肯定沒有問題的，但是他的目標是能夠找到Supervisor從而轉為Thesis option的學生，因此只要聽到有教授在課上說要招學生，他就會拿著簡歷去和教授談。: l7 l& \$ |: Q* T8 s

在我們系，有一個非常牛的program，要從國內申請進去幾乎是沒有可能的，這個男生對這個項目非常感興趣，於是就找我要這個教授上課用的課本和講義（因為我曾經上過這個教授的課，而這門課講的剛好是與那個新項目相關的技術）。他仔仔細細地回家看了一個星期，之後去找教授談。教授一看他雖然沒有上過相關的課程，但是卻對項目比較清楚，而且還表現出了濃厚的興趣，就說如果你能找到另外一個supervisor，我就可以給你作co- supervisor。

於是這個男生又去找另外一個今年要招學生的教授，那個教授比較年輕，Waterloo CS本科，在MIT讀的Master和Ph.D，實驗室裡的項目都是最新的項目，而且有很多很新的idea，據我所知，目前在他手底下幹活的Ph.D有 3、4個中國人，背景不清楚，但是可以肯定的是，他去年只從中國國內招收了一個學生，是清華畢業的，其他幾個學生都是從伊朗招的。

這個男生同樣表明了他的強烈願望，於是教授給他機會在他的實驗室裡作項目，3個月以後看進展，如果滿意就可以收他作學生。這個男生5月初才可以正式入Master Program，但是現在導師的事基本上就已經敲定了。我和他周圍的朋友都認為這是個很好的機會，努力幹3個月，不會的就玩命兒學，到時候出活兒絕對沒有問題。

這就是他從course option的independent student轉為兩個牛教授的thesis option的學生的過程，希望有這方面疑問的gter可以看一看。雖然也許他只是一個特例，但特例也是可以說明問題的。至少對於那些選擇拒絕 course option的ad的gter永遠不可能有這樣一個機會去和導師談，也永遠沒有可能進這樣的實驗室。

關於教授招學生—國外留學生經驗與想法 part4

這個老師是加拿大排名前三的學校的終身教授，現在很牛，請他開會都要提前預約，否則日程就都滿了，有nature的文章。現在的實驗室上上下下加一起，20多人呢8 A/ u( q4 }/ [2 h) ~

他今年收了一個中國學生，國內2流學校（我認為的），托夫607，作文5.0，gre1900，本科成績大概85吧，本科期間參加了科研小組（可能是這個詞），3年級的時候作為交訪學生在日本呆了半年（日本的這個學校排名很好）。所以有一封日本教授的推薦信，評價是思維非常活躍，見解獨到，但是有時候感覺基礎知識有些不紮實，但是很有潛力。

這個老師和我們座談的時候說，他對這個學生感興趣是因為，他日本教授的推薦信，尤其是日本教授的用詞，意思是雖然還有很多不足，但是個很有潛力而且願意付出工夫的學生。9 O# O7 I. \6 _) j3 d E# e$ a1 U2 Z
這個老師說，他不在乎他的學生是否成績顯赫，是否是中國名校畢業，因為他認為中國的教育水平相比於國際還是有差距的，他希望的學生是有良好思維習慣的，而且肯吃苦。因為他說，搞科研，有時候需要吃苦和活躍。# P+ u1 _: g4 p% J" X( B1 L; Z: l6 m

之後這個老師與這個學生進行了通信，雖然他感覺到一些不足，但是總體來說，他還比較滿意，所以他最後同意接受了他，而且願意付他的學費和生活費) ], g5 c [. J6 M% j7 z
這個老師對我們說，他覺得不足的地方時，當他和這個中國學生通信的時候，他明顯的感覺到，這個中國學生的通信是使用的英語沒有他的學習計劃之類的表現得那麼好。不過因為這個老師以前代過一些中國學生，所以他表示理解，他知道中國學生的學習計劃和某些中國教授寫的推薦信很多都是一個樣本寫出來的，經過特別的推敲，所以表現得比較好；但經常的通信，他們無法每封信都仔細的推敲，所以就體現出了真實的英語水平。, ~3 ^' `' W4 e6 v2 m2 R
但這個老師說，他不在乎英語水平究竟有多差或者多好，因為他根本不相信英語成績，因為他認為即使是中國英語學院畢業的學生，出了國英語一樣聽不懂。但他想看的是潛力。/ ?4 V4 C( [2 i8 M) ^

他和這個學生通信了將近半年，幾乎每星期一封信，他自己說，像父母和孩子的通信。& B' o+ C @4 Y% s/ D
在這半年裡，他發現中國學生的英語明顯在進步
而且在他的指導下，（他推薦了一些書和文章給中國學生），中國學生的理論水平在進步，是明顯的，他能看到的1 O a, Y& i- l

這個老師認為，這個學生是很優秀的，因為會一步一步的進步，他認為這是一個想從事科研的人最需要的東西。
因為這個老師代過很多學生，他說有的學生來的時候起點很高，本科成績之類的都很好，但是一旦進入穩定期，時間太長，很慢的走出來，尤其是到了博士的後期，需要自己想主意，而且這主意還是可行的時候。
但這個老師說，也有一些學生，起點是低一些，和那些簡歷看起來非常優秀的人比起來好像差很多，但是他們的進步很均勻，每天都進步一點點，不斷持續，這樣積累起來就很多了。

他認為他要的這個中國學生，就屬於後一種情況。0 \8 [4 B/ I7 w

而且他很喜歡這個中國學生，還有一個原因，是他的誠實。他坦誠的承認了自己英語不是特別的好，但是他自己說，他會一步步進步。這個學生確實做到了' r& O- E5 D8 I9 i) o! c

這個老師當時給我的意見時，踏踏實實地做好，不要想那些還不存在的問題，關鍵是把現在做好。每一個台階都走好了，未來自然也會好。
他還說。老老實實的至少在這裡呆兩年，先不要想到那裡念博士的問題，這兩年好好學習，每天都有一點進步，就會是很大的收穫了。

我當時和他開玩笑，問他如果我想轉到他的實驗室，他會要我嗎？, ^0 v( _4 m; U) A
呵呵，他說，不會，因為我的研究資歷太淺了，如果想搞科研，光成績好是沒用的，但是他說，如果我兩年的積累很好，他會考慮的。 T. i+ Q- S: z4 r ?
我有點不服氣，問他，那麼他要的那個中國學生也沒有研究經歷，為什麼他要了那個中國學生
他笑了，說，那個中國學生在大學的時候就表現出了對科研的興趣，而不是像我一樣，只是為了出國才想出國的，因為他和那個學生電話聊天了幾次，每次他們都談很多泛泛的話題，似乎和課本或者他們的項目有關但是似乎又沒有關係的話題，那個學生表現出了對自然科學極深的基礎，雖然那個學生的成績並不好。
他說，至少他從和我的聊天中，沒有感覺到這種感覺，$ U4 m4 `3 q( V
所以他總結了一句話給我，他說，你還不愛你現在從事的事情，至少不投入，如果我沒有說錯的話，你甚至還沒有投入的作過一次實驗。
他說，他想要的是一個可以將來成為科學家的人。
他問我，你想成為科學家嗎？
我說，確實不想。( b Q9 T- d9 p4 A: ^0 o

那些真的很想搞基礎研究的人，你們從小積累的東西，早晚會有用的。即使一些想法也好。

如果老外給你去信，希望你的英語不要和你的申請材料裡表現出來的相差太多才好。遇到這麼開明的老闆，不是很容易的事情。老外，其實很多都沒有到過中國，或者對中國的瞭解還不是很多，他們時常是通過他們身邊的中國人或者學生來判斷的，如果帶了一個好學生，他們就會認為所有的中國學生都挺好的；如果帶了一個不好的學生，就會認為中國學生都不好。

讓你的材料，因為某些東西亮點起來，這是吸引目光的最好說明。

我在加拿大已經呆了半年多了，直到現在自己還沒有想清楚自己是否出來的值得，也許大家可以把我的例子作為一個例子看一下，哈哈（我已經把自己的事情都講出來了，就是為了鼓勵大家趕緊發帖子，把自己的申請經驗或者在國外的經驗寫出來啊！！大家可得多多捧場啊！）: P4 y, a- @9 _* W* O; J6 e

我是國內一個應該算是二流學校（雖然我的學校自己總認為自己挺好的）的臨床專業本科畢業，保送的研究生，只念了一年，就出來了。
因為感情的原因，所以當時只是想出來，只要出來就行，所以只申請了一所學校（應該是加拿大中游或者中下游的學校把）。因為我媽媽的好朋友的孩子曾經在這裡讀書，她說這裡是個養傷的好地方，而且她可以幫我先聯繫一下老師% U3 ?' y! R2 o& o* I

我當時的情況是，托夫已經考完了，成績還不錯吧，640，TWE5。0。不打算考GRE，因為我只想趕緊走。考這個，還需要一段時間，尤其是我還沒有開始複習
我的本科成績非常好，平均分90以上，而且得的獎也不少(這些都讓我的學校開獲獎證明了），又一篇綜述發表（中文雜誌，不過沒什麼用）。而且我的三個推薦人都很好，而且和我的關係都非常好，基本都是他們自己寫的推薦信，根本沒用我寫。1 z: ^! y& Z1 {0 y( e4 o! w1 k2 }

所以在這樣的情況下，我就只申請了那一個學校。因為當時我媽媽朋友的孩子幫我聯繫到一個老師，他願意看看我的情況，然後看是否可以收我。

我先給這個老師寫了一封信。& S3 {' W3 g$ P5 b* Y2 x
這個老師回信說，想看我的簡歷和成績。於是我把簡歷和成績給他發信過去。（我確認我的簡歷和成績是非常好的）
果然，這個老師回信說，我可以正式申請了，他覺得我的條件很好

之後，這個老師果然接受了我，而且我也競爭到了學校的獎學金。所以我的老師很高興。- c1 Y6 V3 u! t6 R" Y$ H1 w

之後，我就來到了這裡。0 F% Y3 H4 S" a8 G" L) \

因為我是為了逃避感情才到的這裡，所以我來到這裡並沒有覺得什麼不好。（雖然我的很多同學和朋友，都勸我，申請加拿大更好的學校或者去美國。因為他們認為，我的條件，應該不是什麼問題，如果再考一個GRE的話）5 |2 V7 E8 R: T; I' T, ^' u

但是感情的逃避終歸有一天會結束的，因為不管再熱烈的愛情，也終有一天會變成涓流，直到最後終於忘記+ Z2 ]/ j% X9 o, s

我的很多朋友打電話，讓我轉校，或者重新申請。還有一個朋友說，她可以直接幫我在他的美國的學校找導師，然後讓我轉到美國去上學。因為他們認為我現在在的加拿大學校實在太沒有名氣了。% Q/ L+ \# h, ]) G; ~/ [" [2 f

不過我拒絕了。- [9 u7 r+ v% l! D, c

因為，我現在的導師對我很好，雖然這個學校不是很有名，但是我的導師很好，所以我根本不好意思跟他說，我想去別的學校. F- t: \! M/ \ A& R1 c
另外，我現在發現，小實驗室的好處是，老闆可以親自教你技術，而且每天都能見到，可以隨時和他討論問題。這是大試驗是無法做到的。尤其對我一個沒有搞過研究的人來說，這可以算是個過渡期。1 X$ U' i8 z/ N9 e6 z& u" o
而且，因為我出國太匆忙，根本沒有什麼目標，所以這個學校相對輕鬆的環境，可以讓我思考一下，自己將來究竟怎麼辦？是就搞研究了，還是想想要不要考醫生（因為我的年齡還比較小），還是怎麼樣的？0 \; E% n& A2 M+ f9 |* t) v+ \ r
還有一個原因，就是我現在用的技術比較特殊，很多人要學一年多才能很好地掌握，現在我的老師可以親自教我，而且這裡壓力的不是那麼大，可以讓我有時間好好的學習。

不過我的朋友們不這樣認為。) n! d/ `- M: h+ y3 ?
他們認為，大的學校，大的實驗室，大的壓力，在短的時間內，可以讓你發更多的文章，而且由於學業的繁忙，感情的恢復也會更快一些5 C5 j) C- j7 v/ q
他們認為，博士的地方很重要，有名的學校，將來找工作也好找。否則，找工作的時候人家都沒聽說過你學校的名字

呵呵，所以我在我的想法和我朋友們的想法中徘徊呢！* A8 X2 d+ p: O: ~* ]: n! @

我的意見：

出國，不是兒戲，不要像我一樣，匆匆的選擇出國，甚至不給自己任何的選擇。否則，真的到了國外，你會後悔的。

國外的教育體制和中國確實不同。我出來了，覺得，年輕的時候出來看看還是有好處的（前提是你不是一個很想當大官的人）。給你一個假設，如果我沒有出國，按照我以前在國內的表現，畢業留校，如果再會拍馬一點的話，5年主治，3年副教授，在表現好點估計30多歲就可以當教授了，如果再會拍馬一點，可能30多歲就當主任了呢。但是如果選擇了出國，即使你的選擇是正確的，你也很努力了，在加拿大讀個博士，估計至少得5年吧，然後博士後，比較順的話也得4年吧，然後找個職位先是助理教授得5 年，如果幹得好，才能生副教授，幹得再好，5年在生教授。估計也得40多歲了吧。
所以想享福的人，還是現在中國呆著吧，等開了公司，或者當了領導，或者掙錢了，出國旅遊就可以了，一樣可以看到美色，而且看得還比我們這些留學生多。' m% {) O7 {' B% [' A7 {' X

我老師說，他當時要我，是因為我的成績太好了。我問我的導師，如果我的成績不是特別好，但是有研究經驗，他會不會要我的時候；我老師說，如果能碰到那種正好是做我們這個的，他肯定會要的，即使那個人成績不好，因為訓練技術都要一年左右的時間，如果是個會用這個技術的人，至少能省一年的時間

我的一個朋友在英國排名3、4的學校裡念碩士，所在的實驗室也很好，據說在相關領域裡除了美國一所大學的一個實驗室以外，接下來就是他所在的實驗室了

他到了那裡很刻苦，經常每天工作到11、12點，週六週日也工作。所以刻苦加上勤奮，他有了一點成果，而且大老闆和小老闆，都同意讓他發表文章，因為他的進展很有意義
應該說，他做得非常好，在他的實驗室
他的老闆想收他做博士，而且免學費，還每年給他1萬的獎學金。 u* b: j2 X4 D! C! T

但是他的女朋友在加拿大的一所一般的學校讀碩士，他的女朋友申請到英國唸書的可能性很小，所以我的這個朋友決定發起英國讀博士的機會，而申請他女朋友所在學校的博士5 r2 T; n$ Y4 k9 `$ b1 v& u6 }4 [! R2 H
他的老闆和他的同事都為他可惜，因為那所加拿大的學校實在是不是特別好，尤其和他所在的實驗室比起來。/ e" Y/ T! N- {, B
但是我的這個朋友，很堅定，為了愛情，無所謂了，他說，可以博士後的時候再到好學校，也可以阿

但是由於這中間的耽擱，和他女朋友因為他要放棄這麼好的實驗室而到她所在的不是很好的加拿大學校，他女朋友一直不同意還是建議他在英國繼續念，所以中間耽誤了很長一段時間。
但由於他的堅決，他女朋友只好答應了。
兩個人商量，先由他的女朋友在學校裡幫他聯繫導師，因為如果在郵寄材料前能找到導師要他的話，推薦信就可以寫的直接一點，因為外國人一般都喜歡看直接寫給自己的推薦信。6 U/ X7 I& X: d7 B% e/ y
" M+ i, S- O+ i' i1 J! o
於是他的女朋友在自己所在的學校開始為他找導師

他的女朋友只有她男朋友的簡歷

他女朋友每到一個老師那裡，就把她男朋友的情況說一下，有的老師直接告訴他女朋友，自己學生太多或者現在沒有錢不打算招新學生；有的老師告訴她，可以先把建立留下來，如果感興趣會直接和她或者她的男朋友聯繫；還有的老師想看她男朋友的成績；有的老師詢問她的男朋友是否有文章發表；有的老師直接問她，為什麼這個人想到這個學校來唸書，他女朋友就說因為他是她的男朋友，一般這樣老師就不再問了。5 e; K* Z/ t1 [
但是她也碰到過一個老師，這個老師也很有名，在相關領域幹得也很好，正好要夏天招一個學生。他的女朋友也找到了這個老師，在他的女朋友去找這個老師之前，有人提醒他的女朋友，千萬不要說這個人是你的男朋友，否則這個老師會反感的。
果然，到了那個老師那裡的時候，那個老師對他女朋友介紹的這個人的背景很感興趣，但是末了問，為什麼這個人要從英國到這個加拿大學校唸書呢，他女朋友說因為考慮到加拿大將來好留下的問題，這個老師又問，那為什麼要到這個學校呢，他女朋友說因為你比較有名啊，那個老師很高興，但之後又問，為什麼要從這個專業轉到這個專業呢，他女朋友一時沒有想到太好的理由，猶疑了一下，但是就因為這麼一猶疑，這麼聰明的老師當然就知道了。所以這個老師立刻問，他是你的男朋友吧？否則我想不出為什麼，他會放棄英國這麼好的學校到這裡唸書，為什麼他會轉專業？& c$ R5 g% g. k4 j& h9 X6 E
他的女朋友一時不知道怎麼回答了。
那個老師又接著說，哦，這個消息太壞了。我喜歡別人申請我，是因為他喜歡我搞得課題，而不是因為他的男朋友或者女朋友在這裡，他必須過來。是不是你們只要能找到一個老師就可以？& G1 w( ^# h0 K7 e3 _$ s
他的女朋友當然及時說，當然不是了，確實是因為他真的很喜歡這個專業。! k5 \7 \) H% n' L
但是那個老師說，不是我不相信你，而是因為這種情況將來發生的情況太多了。比如說，如果你們明天分手了，那麼我接受他了可是他也不會來了；或者如果他來了，可是你到別的地方去念博士了，那麼他也會跟著走了。因為他不是因為喜歡這個項目來的，而是因為你來的。
他的女朋友還說，當然不會了。0 Q/ R( q: L$ W
但是那個老師說，這樣吧，如果他真的對我的項目感興趣的話，就讓它直接申請吧，但是是否錄取就不一定了，因為我也有很多的候選人。

我的朋友和他的女朋友一商量，還是沒有申請這個老師，因為畢竟這個老師沒有說肯定要他。1 {, [' o }0 v; W# m$ F2 f

在尋找導師的過程中，他的女朋友經常遇到這種情況：就是當他女朋友剛說想知道是否老師收研究生的時候，那些老師都特別熱情，因為以為是他女朋友自己要申請呢，但是當他女朋友說是為了她的朋友的時候，那些老師就說，哦，這樣啊，那把簡歷留下吧，如果感興趣，我會直接聯繫的。因為我和你談，也沒什麼用，畢竟還是無法瞭解你要介紹的那個人究竟怎麼樣$ o6 A- D6 }& d `% `
$ a( N! W% H" p. t3 i
因此，一直沒有什麼進展，但是截止日期也快到了。最後他們做出決定，還是先把申請材料寄出來吧

於是他們在截止日期前一個月，把材料寄了出來。他們認為，憑英國和加拿大裡得這麼緊，肯定寄到了。

但是事情並不像想像得那麼順利
申請材料足足寄了一個月才到，恰好壓在截止日期上，不過還好，還有效。" I2 n, d% i( [
但是推薦信卻一直沒有到。
這樣又一直等，但是還是沒到。只要材料不全，就不能往申請的系傳/ Z6 P% h f$ P! X9 P
於是他們決定再寄一遍，
可是直到今天，我這個朋友的材料仍然不全，因為少一封他英國的推薦信，可是他的這封推薦信，已經寄了兩遍，但是就是沒有5 G: g6 d+ l7 E+ p
, A+ p4 p. r: |- U' e0 W% Q) U
這時候一件意想不到的事情發生了
一個老師寫信給我的朋友，說希望他直接郵寄兩封推薦信給他* B- L, G5 \' Z. L! C
我的這個朋友高興極了，立刻快遞了兩封，順便又郵了兩封給研究生院
還好這個老師順利的在兩個星期內接到了推薦信
因為推薦信都寫得很好，所以這個老師決定接受我的這個朋友
我的朋友和他的女朋友都非常高興* Z3 j* W! W+ Z0 I/ r) m9 I6 t7 V

但就在這時，這個老師又從他的女朋友那裡要了我的這個朋友的家裡電話
因為他想電話面試一下我的這個朋友
這個老師是個加拿大人，可能也是從美國過來的，從來沒有收過中國學生
我把這件事情給我的導師講的時候，我的導師說，這種電話面試，在國外很常見，尤其是你找工作的時候。給你電話面試的機會，說明這個人很看重你，這個電話面試幾乎就是最後的一關了，但是如果搞砸了，估計也就沒戲了
我的老師還說，對於中國人來講，因為剛來英語不是很好，所以這種電話面試，可以說弊大於利' C, A* b6 u9 \
唯一的辦法就是，先聽老師問你些什麼問題，如果前三四分鐘聽著很吃力，就轉守為攻，委婉的將一些你自己正在做的項目，因為自己做的肯定比較熟，不過是專業還是英語都會表現的好點
那麼就有可能彌補你之前的不足

因為電話面試，重要的是讓老師感覺到你還有那麼點靈光# v" [/ K$ Z# X+ Y

我把我的意見告訴給我的這個朋友，希望他能順利得到他女朋友的身邊，1 W& K" @, c# o# n8 \. M

如果打算申請，就一定趕早，尤其是國際學生，因為兩個國家之間的傳遞，什麼事情都可能發生。加拿大罷工非常普遍，所以如果趕上郵局罷工，估計你的材料一時半會也到不了了。即使有人幫你找導師，你也可以先把材料寄過去，因為如果真的找到導師要你了，他就可以直接拿到你的材料了。

如果你有朋友在某個學校，如果他願意幫你找導師（私下裡），對申請肯定有利。所以這也是一些F2為什麼更容易找到導師的緣故，因為畢竟他們離老師近，可以直接和老闆談，也能給老闆一個全面的印象，如果你足夠優秀，接受的機會自然就多了' S1 V' T- g0 i, j1 ^

從這個例子，你也能看出來，老外很注重你的想法，他們也很看重為什麼你要出國，為什麼你要到這個學校，為什麼你要到這個項目。因為不同的教育體制是老外認識到，如果沒有興趣，是不可能做好事情的。所以很多老外老闆，都很難理解，為什麼一個臨床的本科生要放棄當醫生的機會，而到外國去搞基礎？所以啊，這些，你都不得不說清楚，否則可能一些老師就會因為這樣的原因，而不收你了。

自己的實力還是最重要的。我的這個朋友，因為在英國做得比較好，他的英國老闆（是個鬼子）對他的評價很高，這也是為什麼他女朋友學校的那個老師會給他電話面試的機會一樣。所以不管你是在國外還是國內，能練聽力口語就趕緊練，能多長點力量就趕緊長，將來肯定有用的。

另外一點就是：大家覺得我的這個朋友為了他的女朋友放棄英國那麼好的學校值得嗎？尤其加拿大的這個學校還不是很好。我想聽聽大家的意見，因為我這個朋友的女朋友今天還給我發悄悄話，問我的意見，因為她害怕有一天她的男朋友會後悔當初的選擇。

剛考完試，所以恰好沒事給大家寫點東西，希望會對你們有用

第一個例子

我的cosupervisor（是個美國老太太）今年九月份要招一個新學生，希望他讀博士
因為我是個中國人，而且來了做得還不錯，所以她也突然對中國申請者感了些興趣（她比較有名，但是從來不收中國學生，因為她曾經帶過一個學生，特別懶，所以對中國學生印象不是很好）' X/ {! P+ q$ ]8 e* ]
另外，我在的學校在加拿大屬於中游的水平，或偏下4 B, m: f; T. t- ^7 E1 D

在這些申請者中，有一個學生引起了她的興趣。這個中國學生是中國一個估計排名在前10的學校的研究生，今年夏天碩士畢業。他的本科成績很差，基本上很少在80分以上的，託付成績不高，不到600，gre成績還可以（估計適當時機考的時候考的），有一篇第三作者的文章（中國雜誌上發表）3 a* O+ f' l% Y! k5 A* R
! p8 C6 e& G1 e; q
這個美國老太太對他感興趣，是因為這個中國學生附在申請材料裡的那篇發表文章，因為這篇文章使用的技術，恰恰是這個美國老太太下一個課題需要使用的技術，但是這項技術一般要花費一年的時間才能完全掌握* ?7 K% M Z) z; M
% d/ d, y+ w7 \2 o
所以這個美國老太太特別感興趣。她甚至沒有看這個學生的本科成績和託付之類的成績1 p* U" c* ~' }. M+ z
但是她有一點疑問，就是這個第三作者究竟是什麼位置，是參與了這個項目，還是只是打了點雜，而根本不會這項技術

所以美國老太太來問我，我無法回答，因為第三作者的可能性太多了。

之後，美國老太太又看了她的推薦信，推薦信寫得都很好，於是美國老太太在網上找到了中國學生所在的大學的網站，在網上找這些推薦信的這幾個教授的介紹，但是遺憾的是，這個大學只列出正教授的明細，老太太沒有找到寫推薦信的這三個教授（他們的名頭都寫的是教授）
老太太的第一反應是，推薦信是假的，因為她在網上找不到這三個教授的介紹。6 l- _8 Q- P+ D, K

然後我告訴她，中國大學的網站更新的不及時，所以可能是還沒有加上去。" ]: C1 a' o% c& [# H
老太太感覺好了點。) a' _: h0 f; g- }4 N0 H

於是她給這個中國學生發了一封email, 詢問為什麼她的大學網站找不到這三個大學教授的情況介紹；並和他聊了一些關於這項技術的問題；並問他是否他所在的實驗室有更多的論文發表

這個中國學生很及時的回信了，告訴老太太說，因為一個教授退休了，現在是返聘的所以網站上沒有；另外一個教授是剛從副教授提拔的，所以網站上還沒有
並發來三篇中國刊物上的文章給老太太2 @. `% f7 m9 G

但是老太太明顯減少了對中國學生的信任8 O, f/ v0 E- p$ S- j

老太太看了這三篇文章，確實是他們實驗室發表的，而且技術也確實是和老太太的項目有關的

但是老太太還是想確切地知道這個中國學生究竟是干什麼的

她給寫推薦信的其中一個教授寫了一封信，詢問這個中國學生的情況
可惜，沒有回信
後來，這個中國學生解釋，是因為這個教授已經退休了，雖然還是實驗室的頭，所以可能不經常去學校，因此沒有看到郵件2 l7 N- z3 F8 \

老太太又給另外一個教授，據這個中國學生說，是現在實驗室的頭，寫了一封信，詢問這個中國學生，也是這個教授的研究生，究竟做些什麼技術，人怎麼樣，是否踏實之類的& y, }7 ~2 I! X, X: Y3 M
結尾的時候。老太太寫，希望這個教授可以給他一個電話號碼，然後老太太想打電話和這個教授談談，瞭解一下這個中國學生的情況。9 e$ D4 J3 s( U) f, l
可惜，又是杳無音信! o/ J3 d! Y: Z

過了幾天，那個教授沒有回信，倒是這個中國學生回信了，跟老太太說，她的老師告訴他，老太太寫信給這個老師說他學生的神情有些問題，於是中國學生寫信詢問。
老太太差點沒有暈倒。

現在，這個學生仍然在懸著，老太太對她的興趣已經很小了。
老太太問我，是不是中國學校的教授外語都不是很好，或者都不知道推薦信很重要？
老太太告訴我，如果一個學生的推薦人遲遲不郵寄推薦信，或者發信詢問學生情況的時候推薦人遲遲不灰心的時候，外國人一般認為肯定是學生不是很好，所以推薦人不知道如何回答，才遲遲不給回信的。% A1 K7 q- z- F! @* d& K

我不知道，最後我的cosupervisor是否會收這個中國學生，不過現在看來可能性已經越來越小了
雖然最開始的時候，我的cosupervisor對這個中國學生特別感興趣，而且拒絕了很多加拿大和美國學生的申請，基本上打算收這個中國學生了
但是因為這許多的因素，老太太總結說，還是收個加拿大或者歐洲或者美國的學生吧，至少它可以知道他們做得怎麼樣，不像中國這樣，不好聯繫，& t) E0 r' v4 f! K8 F

國外很注意推薦信，所以請你找一個熟悉你而且接到外國老師詢問也會為你回信的人。
雖然這樣的情況不是很多見，因為很多人都是沒有這麼麻煩也被錄取了的，但是還是小心一點的話。
如果這個中國學生沒有被錄取，說實話，真的是挺冤枉的！

另外，如果你有工作經驗，或者研究經驗的話，很可能，你的本科成績和託付之類的成績，將不會成為主要影響你的因素了

All applicants to degree programs must submit the following:

Online Application Form.
Application Fee of $75 for each application submitted.
Official Transcripts from all colleges and universities from which you have received credit.
Letters of Recommendation (three).
Resume and Essay (please note that there are special instructions for the essay, depending on the degree program to which you are applying, outlined in the application).
Graduate Record Examination Scores (GRE), required of all applicants, though applicants to the area of Project Management and Real Estate Studies in the degree program Master in Design Studies may submit the GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) in lieu of the GRE. When requesting that GRE or GMAT scores be sent to Harvard University, applicants should use the institution code for the Graduate School of Design (3455); a department code is not needed.
For International Students: Evidence of English Proficiency (TOEFL and TSE scores, or TOEFL internet-based test scores; see www.ets.org for test information).
Portfolio. Applicants to degree programs other than the Master in Urban Planning program must submit a portfolio that includes their most important and representative design work. Master in Urban Planning applicants do not need to submit a portfolio. The portfolio for Master in Design Studies and Doctor of Design applicants should consist of scholarly, academic and/or professional work and may or may not include visual material, at the discretion of the applicant, and as related to the proposed research area. Special students may also be required to submit portfolios.

Requirement of NYU ITP

The deadline for submitting applications for the Fall 2008 term is January 8, 2008.
What materials do I have to submit as a part of the application?

All applicants need to submit a completed application form, personal statement, current resume, 2 letters of recommendations, official transcripts, the application fee, and an optional creative portfolio. There is also an optional group interview process. International students must also submit TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) results.

Through the online application system, everything can now be submitted online except transcripts, portfolios and TOEFL scores. Applicants are strongly urged to request that their recommenders file their letters through the online system. If your recommenders are unable to use the system, letters of recommendations and official transcripts can be sent directly to the Tisch Graduate Admissions Office. The applicant's name and social security number must be listed on the supporting materials so that Graduate Admissions can accurately match them with the rest of the application file. Please refer to the detailed instructions in the application.

The departmental code for the TOEFL score is 9633.

GRE scores are not required for admissions.

Do I have to submit a portfolio? Will this help or hinder my application?

Submitting a creative portfolio is optional. The portfolio is meant for those applicants who feel that they have something creative to share with the admissions committee.

Applicants can submit professional or personal works, anything that exhibits ideas and a sense of creativity. For example, an applicant who is a professional photographer may want to submit a portfolio - i.e. via slides, print, digital images, etc. On the other hand, an applicant who is an amateur photographer is also welcome to submit a personal portfolio.

However, please make sure to fill out the creative portfolio description sheet so the Admissions Committee understands how to interpret the work - whether it's professional quality, a class project, or a personal hobby.

Please note that it does not reflect badly on applicants if they choose not to submit a portfolio. Also, please note that ITP cannot be held responsible for any creative materials lost or damaged while in our possession or in transit. Please do not send us original work. Applicants who would like portfolios returned must include a self-addressed stamped envelope with the portfolio.

I am an international student. Are they any other issues that I need to know in order to apply to the program?

In order to avoid delays, international students are encouraged to submit all application materials in advance of the January 8th deadline to the Tisch Graduate Admissions office.

All international students need to take the TOEFL English exam. There are special cases where applicants may be able to waive out of this requirement, please refer to the graduate application for more details.

Once an international applicant is accepted to the program, NYU will provide assistance with student visa issues. More information can be found in the graduate application and on the Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) website.

Requirement of MIT architecure

Master's Graduate Programs

All graduate degree programs begin in the fall term. The Application for Graduate Admission used by all graduate programs at MIT must be completed online or downloaded and sent to the MIT Department of Architecture by December 15. It is the responsibility of the applicant to be sure that the department receives a completed application and all supporting materials on time. Applicants will be notified of missing application materials via email approximately three weeks after the admission deadline.

Students interested in applying to more than one degree program must submit a separate application and fee to each department and/or degree program.

筆者於2007年四月初以準學生身分受邀參加美國東岸四所學校(Columbia, MIT, Harvard, Yale) 研究所課程的 OPEN HOUSE，在參觀之後深深感到各校教學宗旨與方向之差異性，希望能將這些經驗與台灣學生分享，提供各位在選擇學校時參考，以便針對個人的喜好鎖定並開始準備申請研究所這漫長的過程。

Columbia University GSAPP
Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation
哥倫比亞大學建築研究所

哥倫比亞大學建築研究所成立於1881年，位於紐約市曼哈頓島上。系館是由建築系及Avery Library 共用的 Avery Hall。哥大所提供的program很廣泛，包括正統的M.Arch（註一），後學士進修的MS.AAD及MS.AUD、MS. Historic Preservation、MS. Urban Planning、MS. Real Estate等等。台灣學生大多數會申請MS.AAD (Masters of Science in Advanced Architectural Design) 及MS.AUD (Masters of Science in Advanced Urban Design) 這兩個學位，其特色為修業年限僅需一年，且申請時只要求托福成績，不需考GRE，因此這兩個學位有來自全球大約55個不同國家為數不少的的國際學生申請。雖然修業年限僅僅一年，但課程方面仍然將三學期的課程濃縮至一年的時間，所以每年六月即開始summer term，在時間上及課程密度上是最高的program。

哥大擁有紐約市區的地理優勢，在都市相關的研究及發展上佔地利之便，師資方面也因地緣關係而能時常引進年輕的紐約新銳建築師，帶領學生探討新一波的建築思維。系主任Mark Wigley自上任以來便強調哥大希望能培養更全面且具前瞻性的建築師(The Expanded Architect)，甚而重新定義建築師的傳統範疇，使其涵蓋到社會、經濟、政治面等等，積極推動建築師這個行業的進化。在哥大任教的老師們包含老牌建築評論家如Kenneth Frampton，中生代建築師如Stephen Holl，新生代建築師如Lise Anne Couture，Hani Rashid ，Greg Lynn等等。哥大向來以強烈的實驗性，前瞻性的建築研究聞名，紮實的3D視覺呈現課程搭配先進的電腦輔助設計，包含 generative components、Java scripting / Maya MEL、algorithmic design、emergent strategies等等。

Avery Hall 空間不大，哥大學生人數又多，MArch、AAD、AUD各招收80人，因此系館裡總是塞滿了人；但這也是哥大最大的優勢，來自世界各地的精英，將於這個高密度的環境共處一年，學生之間的互動與學習機會非常頻繁。更不用說紐約市這個最大的建築實驗場，藝文活動，博物館，街頭抗議活動，無時無刻都發生著有趣事情的城市；相信環境是最大導師的人們，這個環境絕對是最適合你的。

值得一提的校園建築則有 Bernard Tschumi 設計的Alfred Lerner Hall學生活動中心。

逢甲目前有兩位學長就讀於哥大，陳柏全學長攻讀MSAAD學位，鄭博聰學長攻讀MSAUD學位，均預計於今年夏天畢業。

（註一）M.Arch，亦即M.Arch I，即台灣的非本科研究所課程，如同東海B組等三年或三年半建築碩士課程。

麻省理工學院建築及城市規劃學院

位於Cambridge 波士頓與哈佛大學為鄰，在理工界頗負盛名的麻省理工學院，建築學院則成立於1865年。SA+P 底下又包含了Architecture、Planning、Real Estate、Visual Studies、及Media Lab五大系所。這樣廣泛的跨領域性質有助於促進各個相關科系之間的交流互動，包含課程之間的學術交流與不同背景學生彼此觀念上的吸收，甚至許多的課程是可以互修的。

↗ MIT走廊空間

MIT 建築系並沒有一個獨立且界定範圍明顯的系館，大部分相關設施、教室、及辦公室集中於所謂的Building 7，其他則散佈於Building 3、5、10等等，空間上經由許許多多的走廊互相連結相通。這樣分散式的結構促成一個現象，就是系上的空間經常會與其他系所的空間相鄰甚至重疊共用，進而達成非正式學術交流的目的。比方說在去工作室的途中會經過材料系所的研究室，進而有機會發現新的材料可以運用，甚至要借重材料系的專業知識及機器設備也將輕而易舉。

MIT在科技、資源、及資金方面皆為世界頂級，跨領域及”硬”科學 (Hard Sciences)方面的支援能力更是無人能比。值得一提的是MIT許多的產學合作計劃案，如長年與北京清華的設計工作營、SIGUS計劃 (Special Interest Group in Urban Settlements)關注第三世界國家的聚落環境發展議題、及Media Lab的多媒體設計與研究路線 (有關Media Lab的詳細資訊請參考2007年3月15日出刊的第40期ppaper)。

MIT 建築系自中國建築師及中國首間私人事務所非常建築(Atelier FCJZ)主持人張永和擔任系主任之後便急速於國際間竄紅，一改外界對MIT原有的刻板印象。長年來MIT與美國政府、各大民間企業合作開發研究案不斷，延續了學術各方面的研究及應用上與校外單位合作的優良傳統。有了充足的校外資金與資源，與其他長春藤私立學校相比MIT針對國際學生所開放的獎學金條件也較為優渥。

MIT SA+P所提供的program類別更是廣泛，在此僅將與建築關聯性較大的提出來介紹。以台灣學生而言，大多數人鎖定的會是SMArchS (Master of Science in Architecture Studies)這個學位，兩年制的學程，跟哥大的MSAAD、MSAUD一樣是只要求托福不要求GRE。其中的特色是學生在申請時便要選擇一個專攻領域，共有五個領域可選：1. Design and Computation, 2. Architecture and Urbanism, 3. Architecture and Technology, 4. History, Theory, and Criticism, 5. Islamic Architecture。每個領域又各有專攻，比方說Design and Computation 組將專注於如何將CAD/CAM（註一）的最新技術運用於建築設計上，是很偏重於電腦程式語言設計的課程；Architecture and Technology 則研究建築相關的先進施工法與材料、物理環境之設計策略整合、永續性設計、節能建築、等等建築技術相關研究主題。

SMArchS 學位另有一項特色─所有學生必須於畢業前完成一篇碩士研究論文，在這方面與其他學校以設計studio為重心有明顯不同，充分顯出MIT的研究導向性格。針對於此，主任張永和上任後立刻著手加強MIT design studio這方面的師資與品質，朝向研究與設計並重的境界邁進。

特殊校園建築方面有Frank Gehry的Stata Center、Steven Holl的Simmons Hall宿舍、Eero Saarinen的Kresge Auditorium及MIT Chapel、與Alvar Aalto的學生宿舍名作Baker House。

逢甲目前有一位林家樑學長就讀於MIT，今年夏天將於SMArchS Architecture and Urbanism組畢業，同時將繼續轉攻MIT Media Lab Smart Cities Group MSc學位。

（註一）在此將CAD (電腦輔助設計) 之定義延伸至包含scripting，generative design, algorithmic design等等。

哈佛大學設計學院

哈佛大學成立於1636年為美國歷史最悠久的知名學府，建築學院則是成立於1914年，並於1936年整合Architecture、Landscape Architecture、City Planning 三系（註一）合併成為設計學院且正式命名為GSD。GSD將所有設計相關學系聚集在同一個屋頂下以便促進交流，系館是擁有階梯狀工作室空間的Gund Hall（註二），此建物即東海建築系系館工作室空間的原型，只是尺度放大好幾倍。

附近更有科比意大師設計的Carpenter Center、James Stirling的Arthur M. Sackler Museum、Walter Gropius 設計的Harkness Commons、及Josep Lluis’ Sert 設計的Harvard Science Center等校園建築。

GSD 所提供的program除了professional degree的碩士學位M.Arch I (Master in Architecture)、MLA I (Master in Landscape Architecture)、MUP (Master in Urban Planning)之外，後學士研究的包含M.Arch II (Master in Architecture)、MLA II (Master in Landscape Architecture)、MAUD (Master of Architecture in Urban Design)、MLAUD (Master of Landscape Architecture in Urban Design)。另外還有研究導向而沒有design studio的課程MDesS (Master in Design Studies)、DDes (Doctor of Design)、PhD (Doctor of Philosophy)；其中MDesS與MIT的SMArchS一樣分成四個專攻領域並且以論文為畢業需求：Design and Technology、History and Theory、Urbanization and Housing、Real Estate and Project Management。

大多數建築系畢業生攻讀的MArch II、MLA II、MDesS課程修業年限為一年半，而MAUD及MLAUD則為兩年的課程。設計課方面Studio Option 則是由各個不同課程的學生混修，因此同一個studio裡頭很可能會有建築、都設、及景觀設計的學生存在，大大增強了不同領域之間的接觸與交流。

師資方面GSD是非常廣泛且國際化的，如Rafael Moneo、Peter Rowe、Alex Krieger、Jacques Herzog、Pierre de Meuron等等。Studio Option更是師資陣容強盛，如FOA的Farshid Moussavi、Atelier Bow-Wow的塚本由晴、Preston Scott Cohen、David Adjaye等中至新生代建築師。

GSD非常強調學校的國際性、多樣性 (diversity)、及包容性；這意味著你將有可能在GSD看到傳統的手繪圖面及設計手法，也可能會看到極為先進的數位設計技術，代表學校提供一個平台讓學生去探討自己的興趣所在並全力支援其發展。以M.Arch II的課程結構為例，設計課除外僅有四學分的必修，其餘皆為選修課程，讓學生依照自己興趣去自由選擇並建構學習方向，甚至可以跨學院修HBS、KSG、 HLS（註三）的課程，或跨校修MIT建築學院的課程。由此可見學校希望學生為自己量身打造適合自己的課程，配合強力的師資陣容、國際化的學生族群、及多樣性的領域結合。將近一世紀以來，GSD長久處於設計學術及實務界的領導地位，不論學術或實務界人才輩出，證明此一老牌設計學院實力之堅厚。

逢甲目前為筆者將於今年秋季班入學攻讀哈佛M.Arch II碩士學位。

耶魯大學建築學院

耶魯大學位於New Haven，Connecticut，介於紐約與波士頓中間，是一個小而安靜的大學城。耶魯大學藝術學院於1869年成立時為全美首間藝術學院，並於 1916年成立建築系。系館是著名且備受爭議的Yale Art and Architecture Building，由Paul Rudolph設計並於1963年落成，在7層樓的高度內設計了多達36個不同水平高度的階差。1969年系館發生大火後進行大改建 (傳言是位不爽的學生縱火的，但始終沒被證實)，但預計今年將重新整修並恢復當年的原始設計。

↗ Yale A+A Building

相較於其他學校，Yale SOA 提供的學位沒有那麼廣泛，僅有M.Arch I (三年)、M.Arch II(兩年)、及M.E.D. (Master of Environmental Design，兩年)三種主要學位。換言之Yale SOA雖然將全力集中於建築師的訓練及養成，但都市設計相關議題及訓練已然整合於建築課程之內。

目前系主任為老牌建築師Robert A.M. Stern，師資陣容也非常強大，包含今年開始擔任專任教師的數位建築設計先驅Peter Eisenman，design studio方面則有Zaha Hadid、Greg Lynn、Frank Gehry、Demetri Porphyrios、Ali Rahim等名師帶領。再加上耶魯本身學生數量收的很少（註一），因此學校資源是非常集中的，師生之間的關係也非常密切；系主任Robert Stern可以當場叫出每一位學生的全名，可見老師與學生之間的互動頻繁程度。

Yale是個非常注重實做的學校，studio空間裡堆了滿坑滿谷的實體模型，學生之間互相學習及合作向心力非常高，如年度系刊Perspecta及季刊Constructs均由學生負責編輯。系館內的評圖空間暱稱Pits，位於各Studio樓層空間中央的降低區塊，便於全校學生參與評圖與討論，為整個Yale建築教育的核心場所。將設計融入社區與居民生活也是該系目標之一，每年都會跟附近當地居民舉辦一個design + build studio，跟居民或社區合作設計並親手建造一棟民宅。在學術理論與史論方面也有很扎實的課程，並有著名評論家如Vincent Scully，Leon Krieger加持。

雖然系主任Robert Stern是有名的後現代主義建築師，並且Yale SOA向來以扎實的建築訓練著稱，但並不代表它的建築教育較為傳統保守或落後；數位設計教學方面則由Peter Eisenman及Ali Rahim等擁有數位專長的建築師領軍， Rapid Prototyping 3D Printer、三軸、五軸CNC車床、Laser Cutter等設備應有具全，在數位設計及數位製程方面也不落人後的陣容，確保Yale SOA在傳統與前衛各領域的均衡發展。國際觀方面，則以近年來持續舉辦的德國柏林及中國上海design studio為代表。

Yale 校園景觀之美號稱長春藤聯盟之首，除了建築系館A+A Building以外更有兩棟Louis I. Kahn大師的名作比鄰而居，分別為Yale University Art Gallery及Yale Center for British Art；另外有SOM早期經典作品Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library，Eero Saarinen的David S Ingalls Hockey Rink，及Marcel Breuer設計的Becton Engineering and Applied Science Center。

據筆者所知，逢甲目前並無校友就讀於Yale SOA。

連絡教授的原則與範本

分享「聯絡教授」原則
我要寫信給教授前，也是到處找範本與規則。嗯，其實中國學生有不少積極聯絡教授信件的範例，但是，說實在話，我看了有點害怕，因為他們採取的態度還蠻直接與傲氣的，有的人一副就是我有興趣所以你要收我的樣子。或許這些人後來也的確拿到admission，但畢竟不是我的風格，我還是想走「客氣問候中帶著積極企圖心」的路線。後來找到一篇某學校教授給學生的信（我猜是理工學院的吧，因為許多理工學院的學生好像更需要（或被規定）在申請時就跟教授聯絡），覺得可以當作通則，所以在寫信時就好好利用了一番。這是連結： http://www.cs.virginia.edu/~evans/advice/prospective.html
基本上，這位老師告訴學生聯絡教授的原則，我詮釋如下：
1.「你」不是傳單：不要以為發信給所上全部的老師，就證明你夠積極、夠努力爭取錄取機會。聯絡教授不要漫無目標。「有些審查申請文件的老師，可能因為你搞不清楚目標亂發信騷擾，把你列入黑名單」。
2.「以結婚為前提的交往」原則：請先搞清楚對方是不是符合你「相親」的條件，把faculty的簡介，當作是你「選擇人生伴侶」的目標來思考，所以聯繫一個所的老師，應該不是越多越好，而是真正找到你覺得理想的幾個對象，而且覺得他們應該會好好疼你愛你珍惜你，再看看深入交往的機會。
3.必要的衿持：別急，這還不是亮相的時刻，既然有夢中情人，當然要想辦法趕快在亮相前多認識此人的世界。如果有時間，至少上網找篇他的期刊文章欣賞他的風采，如果沒時間，至少要從簡介的蛛絲馬跡（比如說現在他的研究專注在哪方面、專門領域又是什麼）還有google的協助，勾勒出你跟他可能發展的共同興趣。第一次見面才不會有自說自話或話題山窮水盡的窘境。如果看過這些東西，發現你對他的興趣不見了，那可能他並不是那麼適合你發信聯絡。
聯絡教授別做啥
上文中的教授，也提到了聯絡教授的email中，他認為沒必要的資訊：
1.報告你的身世（GPA、成績、社團表現...)與直接問人家要不要接受你的愛。
2.email的長度原則，最好不要讓讀者還得用滑鼠下拉才能讀完，字句精鍊而且講重點。
3.不用花時間力氣描述你的才德兼備、品學兼優，請直接透過你跟他聯絡的內容證明這些東西。
4.請不要浪費空間讚美他,給對方戴高帽。
5.不要很籠統的說，你對對方有多感興趣，請具體的指出，是哪個研究哪個部分讓你愛上他。
6.不要使用任何很炫的網路語言在信中。
7.儘量避免附加檔案。
聯絡教授--我的範例

The purpose of this letter is to request your consideration for my application for the Ph.D. program of [哪個所].
